The Basics

First and foremost, you need to send your child with the basic necessities on their first day of school. While you may not need as much supplies as you would for some of the older grades, you will still need a few basics just in case. At the very least, you will need to supply your little one with a backpack and lunchbox. The preschool will have a list of supplies that you will need for the first day, but it’s safe to assume that you will also want to include a few pencils, crayons, and markers in your backpack.

When you enroll your child in preschool, you will most likely have to fill out paperwork. In most cases, you will turn in the paperwork at registration, but there may be a few forms and questionnaires that require more time to complete. If that’s the case, you will want to send the completed forms with your little one on their first day. It’s also a good idea to let the teacher know that your kiddo has the paperwork so that they don’t forget to turn it in.

Change of Clothes

With young children, messes and accidents are inevitable. If your little one spills paint or food on their clothes or has an accident, you don’t want them to wear wet or messy clothes all day. It’s a good idea to supply your child with a change of clothes that they can keep in their backpack in case of emergencies. That way, when a spill or accident occurs, they can change into a fresh pair of clothes and keep playing!

Comfort Item

If your child is attending school for the very first time, it’s normal for them to feel a little homesick from time to time. One way to combat homesickness is to send your little one with an item that will help to comfort them in times of need. For example, you can send them with a picture of your family so that they can look at your face, or pack their favorite stuffed animal so they can snuggle with it during nap time or squeeze it when they are feeling sad.

Nap Time Supplies

Because preschool-age children are still so young, most, if not all, preschools will have nap time scheduled into their daily routine. In some cases, the school will supply children with a nap mat, but if that is not the case, you will need to provide your child with a nap mat or towel that they can use. Additionally, you may want to include a pillow and blanket to help them feel more comfortable.
